Nevada National Guard names first woman colonel

Allen received her colonel's eagles at a ceremony Sunday at the office of the state adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Tony Clark.

Allen studied nursing in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and joined the Army Reserve in 1976. During her career, she went on active duty for 15 years and stepped down in 1994 after the closing of the Presidio in San Francisco to join the Nevada National Guard. She now serves as deputy commander and chief nurse for the state Guard's medical detachment.

As a civilian she is the Reno clinical supervisor for Home Care Plus.

Allen said, "During my career, I've watched the whole thing grow. Females are much more acceptable in the military now. Now we are seeing them take command positions and taking an active role in the military."
