Public Works Director Ben Edgar said it could take as long as six months to complete the project, which is designed to spruce up its image.
Plans call for the repainting of the building, the weather sealing of bricks and the removal of an unattractive chain link fence, he said.
"We need to improve our image," County Manager Steve Synder told county commissioners.
Indoor improvements also are planned for the courthouse, but work on them won't begin until after completion of the exterior renovations, Edgar said.
Crews also plan to repair sidewalks and replace curbs outside the courthouse.
