Douglas COunty leaders say Leviathan Mine needs better cleanup

That's the call to neighboring lawmakers regarding the abandoned mine in Alpine County about 25 miles southeast of Gardnerville.

It produced copper sulfate and sulfur from the 1890s through 1962. Its toxic discharges have contaminated Leviathan Creek, which empties into Bryant Creek, a tributary of the Carson River's east fork.

California lawmakers are scheduled to meet this month to discuss a variety of funding requests. Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board Director Harold Singer said Douglas' support would be important in securing money.

Douglas County Commissioners have incorporated that support into a resolution that also said that while cleanup efforts have attempted to cut stream impacts and contaminant loads, there still is significant contamination.
