Casino developers rejected by planners

HENDERSON -- Developers proposing a 200-room hotel-casino near Boulder Highway will bring their case to the City Council on Tuesday after the Planning Commission denied their request for a use permit in February.

Council members will review a request submitted by Gaim-Ko Inc. to build the 38,000-square-foot casino between Boulder Highway and Sausalito Drive.

On Feb. 26, the Planning Commission voted unanimously to turn down the use permit request, saying the proposed casino would not be compatible with neighboring areas and doesn't fit in with the city's comprehensive master plan.

About 200 residents showed up at the Planning Commission meeting to argue against the 24-hour establishment.

The neighbors complained that the four-story hotel-casino would increase the amount of noise pollution, litter and crime in the area, decreasing their property values and quality of life.

Gaim-Ko's attorney John Marciano told the commission that part of the developer's proposal includes building walls on three sides of the casino. Marciano also said studies have shown there is no link between casinos and crime in neighborhoods.

Gaim-Ko isn't the only developer that struggled to push a casino plan past the Planning Commission. The review of PT's Mining Company hotel-casino's architectural review was delayed two weeks by the commissioners.

In that case, however, the Planning Commission approved the use permit March 30.
