Letter: Law enforcement OK on advisory committee

On March 22, you published an editorial about the makeup of the advisory committee charged with developing an ordinance establishing a police review board. The editorial stated: "Sen. Joe Neal, the author of the legislation creating the board, is misguided in his opposition to any involvement by police officers on the advisory committee. ... Neal is unable to grasp that much wisdom can be gained from having law enforcement representatives on the advisory committee."

It appears that your editorial was based on an article printed in the SUN a few days earlier. One comment I made was not included in that story.

I told your reporter that, if law enforcement representatives were trying to work toward a designated outcome, I would agree with citizens who disagree with such a presence on the advisory committee.

I have never complained about law enforcement representatives sitting on the committee setting up the review board, as long as they do not try to predispose their own agenda.

Sen. Joe Neal, D-North Las Vegas
