Several floors of LV Hilton evacuated

A two-alarm fire at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino Thursday afternoon resulted in no injuries but upwards to $1 million in damages and the evacuation of six floors.

The electrical fire in the central tower of the 30-story hotel on Paradise Road at Sahara Avenue broke out at 2:30 p.m.

Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said damage was estimated at between $250,000 and $1 million, noting that "electrical repairs can be costly."

Firefighters found the source of the fire -- an electrical panel -- on the eighth floor, Leinbach said.

Fire investigators determined that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction on the eighth floor after water in an 18th-floor toilet overflowed. The water leaked down to the eighth floor, Leinbach said.

The smoke was mostly on the ninth floor, he said. Smoke alarms went off immediately and automatic sprinklers quickly extinguished the fire, Leinbach said.

"The fire was in the heart of the hotel," Leinbach said.

Floors seven, eight, nine, 10, 29 and 30 were evacuated. Eight floors sustained light smoke damage, Leinbach said.

All but the seventh- and eighth-floor guests were allowed to return to their rooms about two hours later. The seventh floor was closed for repairs because of water damage and the eighth floor was closed because of fire damage, Leinbach said.

A spokeswoman for the hotel could not say how many guests were affected by the incident.
