Programs at Red Rock Canyon

April 7, 14, 21 and 28: Introduction to Red Rock Canyon: Introductory hike and program at the Visitor Center introduces new visitors to the canyon. Programs run once an hour, noon to 2 p.m., and last 30 minutes each. No reservations required.

April 7, Water, People and the Spanish Trail: Easy four-mile hike through the Wheeler Springs area includes a scramble up a 400-foot-high hill with views of Cottonwood and Blue Diamond.

April 8, Why Do They Call It Lost Creek?: Easy one-mile family hike to talk about how plants, animals and humans adapted to the desert climate.

April 9, Wild Flora of Red Rock: A 2.5-mile easy hike to become familiar with the flora of the desert, their histories and value to the canyon.

April 10, La Madre Spring Hike: A moderate, five-mile morning hike to look for bighorn sheep and other wildlife at La Madre Spring.

April 11, Bats and Caving: A one-mile hike to the bats' cave to explore cave ecology and habitat. Gloves, long pants and flashlights are required.

April 11 and 25, Bouquet of Sense: Six-mile strenuous hike to become familiar with the plants, wildlife and geology of the Red Rock Canyon area.

April 13, Wildflowers Forever: A three-mile, moderate family hike to see what wildflowers are in bloom at Pine Creek.

April 14, Water, Water, Everywhere: Easy to moderate guided hike to discover clues to Red Rock's ancient, watery past. There will be a 200-foot elevation gain.

April 15, Wheeler Spring Ecology Walk: Explore a unique desert riparian area, a watering hole for wildlife from birds to frogs.

April 18, Pine Creek Wildflower Hike: A two-mile moderate hike to discover what is surviving in the wildflower world and how plants have adapted to the desert climate.

April 19, First Creek Exploration: Look for wildflowers and birds during a moderate to strenuous four-mile hike.

April 19, Sandstone's Story: Explore the colorful Calico Hills on a three-mile moderate to strenuous hike from sandstone Quarry to seasonal natural water basins. Some rock scrambling.

April 20, Plants, Petroglyphs and Ancient People: Learn how ancient people lived in the Willow Springs area on an easy 1.5-mile family hike.

April 24, Pine Creek Wildflower Hike: A three-mile moderate hike to discover what is surviving in the wildflower world and how plants have adapted to the desert climate.

April 25, Dale's Trail Hike: Look for wildflowers, wildlife and geologic formations during a three-mile moderate hike.

April 25, Wildflower Photography for Beginners: Discuss the basic rules for taking great wildflower photos, including simple techniques and design, on an easy hike.

April 26, Desert Kitchen-Desert Pharmacy: Discover the plants used for food and medicine by Native Americans on an easy-to-moderate two-mile family hike.

April 26, Coyote Tails: A two-mile easy hike through the washes and back slopes of the Calico hills will be acompanied by Indian legends and an exploration of coyotes' survivalist nature.

April 28, Life Under the Lens -- Hidden Worlds of the Mojave: A really close-up view of the desert and its inhabitants is explored on a easy, two-mile family walk to White Rock Spring.s
