Anti-casino forces in Detroit get boost

The group first will urge the estimated 110,000 Michigan residents on its mailing list to get involved with the statewide Coalition to Defeat Proposal E, the measure approved by voters in 1996 to allow casinos in Detroit.

The coalition needs to collect 247,127 signatures by May 27 to place the repeal question on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Focus on Family also is looking at other ways to lend support, said Ron Reno, a senior research analyst for Focus on the Family.

"We do plan to support them," Reno told the Detroit Free Press for a story Friday. "There are a number of avenues available."

The Rev. William Quick, coalition co-chairman, said the group has collected about 125,000 signatures and has received additional help since Mayor Dennis Archer relocated Detroit's three planned casinos from the central business district to the Rivertown district.

The Colorado-based organization led by James Dobson reaches millions of conservative Christians with its publishing empire and 4,000-station radio show.
