Prep Volleyball: Durango bounces back, serves notice

After his team suffered its third loss of the season Monday night at Clark, Durango boys volleyball coach Bob Kelly must have doubted his Trailblazers chances as they traveled to division-leading Cimarron-Memorial.

And when Durango fell behind 8-3 in the opening game of the match against the Spartans, his uncertainties must have increased.

But the Trailblazers used momentum-shifting rallies in the first and third games to come from behind and claim an emotional 15-13, 2-15, 15-10 victory over Cimarron Wednesday evening.

The loss was the Spartans' second in a row and Cimarron to 5-2. Durango improved to 4-3 and is feeling good about itself again.

"We took ourselves out of the early part of each game by making careless errors," explained Kelly, whose team rallied from a 9-3 deficit in the third and deciding game. "But we finally settled down and eliminated those mistakes, and that enabled us to win."

Juniors Tomi Huffman and Jason Brown spearheaded the comeback.

Huffman, who displayed a deft touch around the net all eve evening, finished with 40 assists. Brown, the main benefactor of Huffman's pinpoint sets, totaled 18 kills.

"We were really confident coming into the game," said Brown, who only had one hitting error the entire match. "Coming off Monday's loss, we wanted to make sure we played well and got the win."

Oscar Poort added 10 kills for the victors and Tyler Langford chipped in with six blocks.

Cimarron was led by Charles Moser's five kills and Adam Siqueiros' 28 assists.

"When you block as poorly as we did, you really don't deserve to win," said Cimarron coach Holly Condron. "We kept standing around, waiting for someone else to make the play. Unfortunately, it never happened."
