No water strategy for thirsty Lemmon Valley

The Regional Water Planning Commission on Wednesday failed to endorse a strategy because one option included the controversial Honey Lake water importation plan.

The strategy did not endorse any one proposal, but rather recommended several options be pursued with hopes that one would pan out.

However, some commissioners balked at the Honey Lake plan, which they deemed to be too costly and controversial.

Four years ago, Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt halted the Honey Lake project until Washoe County and project developers did more environmental studies.

Those demands effectively killed the $113 million proposal.

Water experts say north valley residents have been pumping more water from their aquifer than is recharged by nature each year.

They warn that unless the trend is reversed, parts of the valley could begin sinking as the aquifer dries up and underground water storage areas collapse.
