LV business owners accused of fraud

The owners of a Las Vegas ice cream distributorship that filed for bankruptcy earlier this year were indicted on fraud charges by a federal grand jury Wednesday.

Rena Phyllis Kopystenski and John Kopystenski owned Quality Ice Cream Co., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1995; and later Alex's Ice Cream Co., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February.

The couple is charged with falsifying documents to collect insurance money and with creating sham companies to obtain more than $100,000 in loans and insurance settlements.

According to the 29-count indictment, sham companies were established using the names of parents or employees as officers of the companies to be used as credit references. The couple also obtained loaned freezers from M&M Mars and claimed them as collateral while also falsifying profit reports, the indictment alleges. This allowed the couple to obtain the loans.

Other counts claim the couple falsely claimed vandalism losses and created false repair invoices and receipts to collect insurance money.

The couple could not be reached for comment on the allegations.
