Letter: Pay women equally for the work they do

On a national level, women earn only 74 cents for every dollar a man earns. In Nevada, the wage gap is 71.3 cents for women compared to every dollar a man earns.

Today, many working-class families survive from paycheck to paycheck. They are often just one paycheck away from disaster, and increasingly that paycheck is a woman's. It is important that women are paid equally for the work they do.

This is not a penny-ante problem. Over a 30-year career, women lose over a quarter of a million dollars in wages alone. Unfair pay affects our paychecks today and our retirement security tomorrow.

Fair pay takes real change. Here in Las Vegas, we will be holding a rally to speak out against fair pay and to hold employers accountable for their pay practices.

We are determined that our voices be heard on this issue. President Clinton has issued a proclamation declaring this day "Equal Pay Day" and we are ready to work with business leaders and other elected officials to institute fair pay for working women in Nevada. All of us need to join together to close this gap.
