Highway bill aids Nevada

The $217 billion House highway bill would give Nevada $159.1 million over the next six years and would earmark funds for specific projects.

Nevada Reps. Jim Gibbons and John Ensign, both R-Nev., voted for the act, which passed Wednesday night.

A Senate version, passed inMarch would give Nevada $184 million. Negotiations to hammer out a compromise will begin soon.

"This important (House) bill provides the funding necessary to improve Nevada's highways," Gibbons said. "(It) will allow us to keep pace with our booming population and economy well into the 21st century."

Here's how the earmarked transportation money is slated to be spent statewide:

The House bill requires that states receive at least 95 percent of their percentage contribution to the highway trust fund, but Nevada would get between 98 and 99 cents for every dollar it pays into that federal coffer. Under the Senate bill, Nevada would receive about $1.01 for every dollar it contributes.
