Father indicted in assaults on girl

A Las Vegas man who was convicted in 1991 of lewdness with his 10-year-old stepdaughter has been indicted on six sexual assault and six lewdness charges involving his natural daughter, who just turned 12.

A warrant was issued Wednesday by District Judge Myron Leavitt for Mark Quilter, 38, who originally had faced one felony charge in Justice Court and was released on $10,000 bail.

At the request of Deputy District Attorney Teresa Lowry, the judge set bail Wednesday at $200,000.

Lowry had argued that Quilter is "a definite danger to the community and his children." He has three other daughters and a son.

The indictment alleges that Quilter had been engaging in sexual acts with his daughter since she was 9 years old.

Lowry said the girl confided in one of her sisters that she was going to go to a school counselor because of her father's activities, but the sister persuaded her to call police.

The girl who was the subject of the 1991 case is now 17 years old and living in a group home, Lowry said.
