Editorial: Las Vegas Wash in need of your help

The wash runs along the eastern part of the Las Vegas Valley and is a refuge for plants, birds and other animals. As the SUN's Mary Manning reports, the marshlands at one time blanketed 2,000 acres with cattails and willow trees, providing an oasis in the desert. Unfortunately, the wash also attracts people who dump garbage.

But there is something that can be done to help rid the wash of garbage. The Southern Nevada Water Authority is getting together with private and nonprofit groups on Saturday to help clean up the wash. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium, with the cleanup lasting until noon.

People often complain about the declining quality of our environment in the Las Vegas Valley, but this is an instance where residents chipping in together can make a positive impact on the valley's environment.
