Body found hanging from school jungle gym

The body of a 20-year-old Las Vegas man was found this morning hanging from a strap tied to a jungle gym on the playground at Lunt Elementary School.

Las Vegas city maintenance workers found the body at about 6 a.m. at the schoolyard, on Harris Street near Eastern Avenue and Bonanza Road. The workers called Metro Police, who in turn notified Clark County School District Police, school police Sgt. Ken Young said.

Metro Sgt. Michael Thompson said no ruling has yet been made on the cause of death.

"It doesn't look like any signs of foul play," Thompson said, "But we have to wait for the coroner's cause of death before we rule that out."

A nylon strap, similar to a gym bag strap, had been tied around the victim's neck, Thompson said, adding that his feet were touching the ground.

The man was wearing a jacket and jeans. The jeans were found around the man's ankles.

"His pants were baggy and may have fallen off of him," Thompson said.

The man's name will not be released until his family is notified, he said.

Coroner's office investigators removed the body from the schoolyard at 6:45 a.m., just before students were to arrive at 7 a.m.

An autopsy was scheduled for later today to determine the cause of death, a coroner's office spokeswoman said.
