Winter storm brings snow to western Nevada, Sierra

A snow advisory remained in effect for the Reno, Carson City and Minden areas, where anywhere from a dusting to 3-5 inches fell overnight.

In Yerington, accumulations of 6-8 inches were reported.

The snow continued to fall early today, and chains or snow tires were required everywhere across the western Nevada region and in the Sierra.

Chains were mandatory along Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, as well as on U.S. 50 over Echo Summit.

In the valleys along the eastern slope of the Sierra, chains or snow tires were required on I-80 80 in either direction of Reno as far east as 19 miles east of Fernley; up and down the U.S. 395 corridor; and on U.S. 95 as far south as Hawthorne.

Snow was expected to continue throughout the day, becoming mixed with rain in the lower valleys later this morning, the National Weather Service said.

Additional accumulations of 1-3 inches was anticipated before scattered snow showers decrease after midnight.

Authorities urged motorists to give themselves extra time and drive with caution.

The feisty low pressure system pushed into the area on Tuesday, mostly in the form of rain. At Reno-Tahoe International Airport, 0.40 inches of precipitation was recorded.

Southern Nevada wasn't spared the taste of winter. A winter storm warning was in effect through this morning above 5,000 feet in the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range areas north of Las Vegas, where 8-14 inches of snow was predicted by noon.

Snow advisories calling for 3-5 inches remained in effect for Esmeralda County and central and northern portions of Nye County.
