Volunteers look to build high school in Silver Springs

Pupils currently attend high school in Fernley or Dayton and some residents say the new school is long overdue.

Lyon School District Superintendent Nat Lommori said the earliest a bond issue could appear on the ballot is two years from now.

That's because voters were promised when they passed a $15.8 million school bond in 1993 to build Sutro Elementary School in Dayton and to make improvements on other schools that there would be no further change in tax rates until the year 2000.

It's estimated it would take $10 million to build a high school to serve perhaps 400 pupils. The current tax rate is 75 cents for each $100 of assessed valuation.
