Henderson Parks and Recreation will sponsor a self-defense workshop 1-4 p.m. April 4 at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. Participation is $23.

Participants will learn a variety of effective self-defense techniques, including aikido, a popular Japanese martial art. Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba near the beginning of the 20th century.

The Buddy Charles Concert Jazz Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. April 5 at Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris Street, Henderson. The concert is sponsored by Henderson Parks and Recreation, and admission is free.

The performance will feature original compositions that wer influenced by the style set by band leader and clarinetist Woody Herman. Like Herman, orchestra leader Charles fuses young UNLV Jazz Ensemble performers with international jazz veterans to create a progressive orchestra sound.

Henderson Parks and Recreation will sponsor a "Touch for Health" workshop 7-9 p.m. April 6 at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway raod. If is free of charge to participants 18 or older. Optional workbooks are not included.

The workshop is designed to introduce participants to the benefits of alternative health care, focusing on techniques derived from Chinese acupuncture. The goal of the presentation is to teach participants how to balance the body's natural energy by using techniques of the Chinese acupuncture meridian system. Unlike tradition acupuncture, "Touch for Health" relies on touch and does not involve the use of needles.

A "Parenting Under Stress" workshop will be conducted 6:30-8:30 p.m. April 15 at Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. The cost is $10 per person or $15 per couple.

Workshop participants will be taught the difference between positive and negative stress, how to control stress and how stress can have physical, mental and emotional impacts. This workshop will also discuss how to help children handle their own stress.

Henderson Parks and Recreation will sponsor an introductory waltz dance workshop 7-9 p.m. April 17 at Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. Registration is $5 for participants 16 or older.

The introductory workshop is designed to teach beginners the fundamental techniques of the modern waltz. The instructor will teach participants basic steps, including the left box turn, the spiral step and the hesitation.

A student financial-aid workshop for college-bound high school graduates will be 9 a.m.-noon April 18 at Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris Street. The free workshop is sponsored by Henderson Parks and Recreation. Registration is required by April 10; call 565-2121.

The workshop will familiarize college-bound students with financial assistance services. Topics will include application requirements, deadline dates and need assessments. Program discussion will also include the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Grant-in-Aid, loans, scholarships and work study.

Henderson Parks and Recreation will host a tamale cooking workshop, 10 a.m.-noon April 18, at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. It is open to participants 18 and older.

The instructor will demonstrate how to enhance any Mexican dish by adding homemade tamales. The tamales presented in the workshop will be prepared from scratch, allowing participants to learn step-by-step techniques.

Tamales are dried corn husks wrapped around a coating os masa dough and meat filling. Corn husks are traditional tamale wrapping and can be found at many supermarkets and specialty food stores.

Registration is $15 plus an additional $5 supply fee due to the instructor before class. Call 565-2880.

A free "Practical Parenting" workshop will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 18 at Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris Street, Henderson. The workshop is co-sponsored by Henderson Parks and Recreation and the Clark County Family and Youth Services Parenting Project.

Workshop topics will include coping skills, problem-solving techniques and communication techniques. Information will be provided about child development and positive behavior management skills for children between 5 and 10 years of age, when a child is introduced to expanded environments such as culture, subculture, school, television and peers.

The amount of impact these influences have on children is related to the foundations established by primary caregivers. Since infants form an emotional attachment to caregivers, early development frequently paves the way to healthy relations with others outside the home.

Two Henderson Parks and Recreations workshops. " Cooking Light with Pastas," will be hosted in April. The first is 7-8:30 p.m. April 21 at Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. The second is 10 a.m.-noon April 25 at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. Participation is open to those 17 and older. Each workshop costs $15, with an additional $55 supply fee due to the instructor at class.

During the workshops, the instructor will present several quick, healthy pasta dishes that can be prepared with standard kitchen staples or with fresh ingredients from the supermarket. Dishes presented are described as flavorful, but low in fat and cholesterol.
