Clark County becomes 9th-largest school district

The Clark County School District, the nation's fastest growing, has moved from 10th to the ninth largest district overall, according to statistics released recently by Arlington, Va.,-based Educational research Service.

ERS recorded the district's enrollment at 181,835 students, although district officials, who use different counting methods, report the district's official enrollment at 190,822 this year.

Clark County ranks above No. 10 Detroit public schools and below Hawaii, which includes the entire state.

The rest of the top 10, from the largest: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dade County (Miami), Fla., Broward County (Ft. Lauderdale), Fla., Philadelphia, and Houston.

Clark County's enrollment has nearly doubled since 1987, according to ERS. The district has built 98 schools in the past 10 years. Voters have approved $184 billion in school bond issues for construction.
