Board recommends two-year license for Cashell at Ormsby House

The Gaming Control Board's recommendation on Cashell will get a final review April 23 from the board's parent Nevada Gaming Commission.

Asked how the Ormsby House is doing under his management, Cashell said, "It's been a long struggle through the winter months." But he added many improvements have been made, and the property should generate enough revenue for more improvements.

Cashell and other Ormsby House representatives also said a $60,000 cash draw last week from Cerberus Partners, the New York-based lender that recently took title to the club, should be the last needed until next fall.

He added that revenues during the tourist-heavy summer season should be strong enough to return to Cerberus some of the total $750,000 that has been advanced to keep the club going.

Cashell, a veteran casino executive and a former Nevada lieutenant governor, had been appointed to run the casino on Cerberus' behalf by a Carson District judge. He now holds a three-year lease on the property.

In other action, the Control Board recommended a plan by American Wagering Inc. of Las Vegas to acquire Imagineering Systems Inc. of Reno as part of AWI's bid to be the main keno systems supplier in Nevada.

AWI lawyer Lisa Miller-Roche told the board that the company also is buying another firm, Keno International, and is working on a plan for linked keno games - similar to the linked progressive jackpot slots seen in many casinos.

The Control Board also endorsed plans by Roger Allen DeYoung of Costa Mesa, Calif., and other members of his family to take over the Exchange Club in Beatty.

However, Newport Beach lawyer Kent Giles Snyder, who was to hold a 13.3 percent interest, was dropped from the application after board members questioned him about involvement with a man convicted of drug-smuggling in the 1970s. Snyder had been indicted in the case, but told the board he was never convicted.

DeYoung plans to improve the Exchange Club, a fixture in Beatty since 1906, and build a 50-unit hotel across the street.
