UNLV coach wins strength contest

Mark Philippi, after four days of intense competition during the World's Strongest Man competition qualifying round at Primm, has been named the strongest man in the United States.

Philippi, UNLV's strength and condition coach, squatted five showgirls and nine lead bars (955 pounds), deadlifted four boulders (810 pounds) and ran with a 36,000-pound bus strapped to his back as he went 131 feet in 29 seconds.

Philippi and runner-up Chief "Iron Bear" Collins advance to the World Finals in Primm Oct. 10-13. The International Finals are scheduled Oct. 3-6. The events are open free of charge to the public.
