The boy's body has never been found.
Alvaro Mejia-Ortiz and Ana Romero are charged with killing the boy in 1994. They are accused of causing his death by abuse and also face abuse charges involving two younger children.
Rene Romero is believed to have died around Thanksgiving 1994.
According to police reports, Ortiz is alleged to have cut 2-year-old Miguel and 3-year-old Erik Romero with a knife and beaten them with a belt.
Reno police said Ana Romero allegedly told someone that Ortiz killed Rene Romero in Reno, then dumped or buried his body in a remote area in another state.
