Sport fixer’s brother sentenced to four months in prison

Alan Perry, 49, pleaded guilty in May to two felony counts of aiding and abetting tax evasion for crimes he committed in 1989 and 1990.

U.S. District Judge Lloyd George said Friday he will recommend the defendant serve his sentence at a halfway house.

Alan Perry, a science teacher at Orr Middle School, also must pay a $5,000 fine and the cost of prosecution. Following his release, he must spend four months under house arrest but may work.

The judge also ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service and to pay for the cost of his home confinement, which requires electronic monitoring.

Richard Perry, a former Las Vegas resident, and several family members were named last year in a four-count indictment that accused them of conspiring to hide the professional gambler's income.

Richard Perry, 52, pleaded guilty in April to three counts of tax evasion.

He admitted he failed to report about $350,000 of taxable income earned in 1989, about $43,000 earned in 1990 and about $260,000 earned in 1991. He also admitted he failed to pay about $208,000 in taxes on that income.

George sentenced Richard Perry in August to 15 months in prison but has given the Florida resident until Oct. 6 to surrender. In addition, he must pay a $30,000 fine.

Richard Perry was nicknamed "Richie the Fixer" following his role in the Boston College point-shaving scandal of 1979.

He was photographed in 1989 in a hot tub with three key players of the 1990 UNLV national championship basketball team. The photograph led to questions about his involvement in the program.

In October 1992, Richard Perry was listed in Nevada's Black Book of people banned from casinos.

His 45-year-old ex-wife, Joanne Epstein was sentenced to four months at a half-way house and four months of house arrest after pleading guilty to two counts of tax evasion for her role in the case.

Epstein married her current husband, Michael, in December 1991. Michael Epstein, a professional gambler, was sentenced to four months in prison and four months of house arrest after his guilty plea to aiding and abetting tax evasion in the scheme.

The Perry brothers' father, Harry, has signed a plea agreement.
