Obituaries for November 19, 1997

Mary Adams, 87, of Las Vegas died Oct. 31 in a local care center. A longtime resident, she was born June 1, 1910.

Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North, handled arrangements.

MARY ALTERGOTT

Mary Altergott, 90, of Las Vegas died Saturday in a life care center. She was born March 14, 1907, in Russia. A 2 1/2-year resident, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by three sons, David Altergott and Ronald B. Altergott, both of Kenosha, Wis., and Arthur Altergott of Las Vegas; four daughters, Betsy Davis and Marie Beyer, both of Kenosha, Carol Amundson of Racine, Wis., and Shirley True of Las Vegas; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services and burial will be in Kenosha. Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., is handling arrangements.

The family suggests donations to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Kenosha.

ATHA ANN ALU

Atha Ann Alu, 65, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. A 23-year resident, she was born Nov. 1, 1932, in Topeka, Kan.

She is survived by her husband, Frank J. Jr.; two sons, F. Gary Alu of Las Vegas and Anthony "Tony" Alu of Ely; two daughters, Brenda M. Novielle and Mary Rene Alu, both of Las Vegas; and six grandchildren.

JOE BANEGAS

Joe Banegas, 76, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. He was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Wikieup, Ariz. A 30-year resident, he was a retired laborer and a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters, Danielle Banegas and Elaine Chandler, and one son, Pedro Banegas, all of Las Vegas; two brothers, Alex Banegas of Las Vegas and Don Banegas of Phoenix; two sisters, Carmen Banegas of Los Angeles and Elsie Banegas of Wikieup; and five grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled noon until a 7 p.m. rosary Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Christopher's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park. Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., is handling arrangements.

Jeanne Vivian Blystone, 75, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local hospital. She was born May 22, 1922, in Sioux Falls, S.D. A 47-year resident, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Joanne Blystone of Las Vegas; and two sisters, Leone Bies of Montabello, Calif., and Etrulla Albee of Palo Alto, Calif.

Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church. Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., is handling arrangements.

BENNY BRASSFIELD

Benny Brassfield, 48, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local hospital. He was born Dec. 28, 1948, in Bakersfield, Calif. A 37-year resident, he was a general contractor.

He is survived by two sons, Brian Brassfield of Las Vegas and Benjamin Brassfield of Pleasanton, Calif.; one daughter, Katy Brassfield of Pleasanton; and his parents, Jean and Oscar Brassfield of Las Vegas.

Visitation is scheduled 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. services today in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Graveside services will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park.

ROSS WILSON BROWNING

Ross Wilson Browning, 79, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Hillsboro, Texas. A 21-year resident, he was a restaurateur, a retired veteran and a past Rotarian.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; one son, Ross W. Browning Jr. of Tokyo; one daughter, Marilyn Dunn of Henderson; one brother, Earl Browning of North Carolina; and two sisters, Denise McLaughlin and Maurice Addington, both of Fort Worth, Texas.

Visitation is scheduled 3-7 p.m. Thursday in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.

Virginia Copsey, 79, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. She was born Sept. 23, 1918, in Butte, Neb. A 35-year resident, she was a retired mobile home park manager and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 13, Kodiak, Alaska.

She is survived by two sons, Clayton Copsey and Jon Copsey, both of Las Vegas; one daughter, Sharon Penrod of Portland, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Graveside services will follow in Palm Memorial Park.

William Wayne Fuhrmann, 49, of Las Vegas died Nov. 11 in Las Vegas. A 10-year resident, he was born Aug. 12, 1948, in San Diego.

He is survived by one brother, Donovan E. Fuhrmann of Upland, Calif.

Donna Rae Hodges, 63, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. She was born June 29, 1934, in McCall, Idaho. A 13-year resident, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Marion; two sons, Bruce Pottorf of Sumner, Wash., and Ron Pottorf of Eugene, Ore.; one daughter, Sheri Harris of Battle Ground, Wash.; one stepson, Dan Hodges of Oregon; one stepdaughter, Karen Eubanks of Brush Prairie, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.

ALBERT 'BUTCH' HOWELL

Albert "Butch" Howell, 51, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. He was born May 24, 1946, in Syracuse, N.Y. A 12-year resident, he was a security supervisor at the Fiesta hotel-casino and a Vietnam War Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; one son, Joey Ahmed of Las Vegas; his mother, Frances Young of Wichita, Kan.; and three sisters, Robin Young and Debbie Allen, both of Wichita, and Sharon McCarty of Owensville, Mo.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday in Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston Blvd. A private burial will follow.

ROY JENSEN

Roy Jensen, 60, of Las Vegas died Sunday. He was born Feb. 6, 1937, in Boulder City. A lifelong resident, he was a retired journeyman electrician, a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 357 since 1961, a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 163 since 1969 and the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association since 1971.

He is survived by his wife, E. Kay Gatt Jensen; three sons, Ronald J. Jensen of Carson City, Bruce Thorpe of Wimer, Ore., and Robb Johnson of Las Vegas; three daughters, Cathy Jensen of Turkey, N.C., Trayce Jensen Thorpe of Wimer, and Jenny Jensen Johnson of Las Vegas; his father, Van Jensen of Boulder City; two sisters, Shirley LaBadie of Carson City and Theresa Patterson of Roseboro, N.C.; and five grandsons.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Boulder City. Burial will be in Boulder City Cemetery. Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

ARNOLD JORDET

Arnold Jordet, 76, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. He was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Davenport, N.D. A former eight-year Henderson resident and a six-year Las Vegas resident, he was a retired meat cutter, a World War II Army veteran, a 52-year member of the Eagles Club in Fargo, N.D., and a 30-year member of the South St. Paul, Minn., Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons, Terry Jordet of Gilroy, Calif., and Gary Jordet of Henderson; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 10-11 a.m. Thursday in Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.

NORMA JANE KENNEDY

Norma Jane Kennedy, 68, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local hospital. She was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Las Vegas. A lifelong resident, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Craig; three daughters, Deborah Kolb of San Diego and Jennifer Kennedy and Kristy Crockford, both of Las Vegas; one son, Dennis Kennedy of Las Vegas; three sisters, Maxine Spaulding of Utah, Georgia Rayburn of Henderson and Linda King of Las Vegas; one brother, Calvin Barnum of Henderson; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the LDS Chapel, 3400 W. Charleston Blvd. Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

ARNOLD W. KNEPPER

Arnold W. Knepper, 81, of North Las Vegas died Nov. 2 in a local care center. He was born July 13, 1916, in Cascade, Iowa. A 35-year resident, he was a hotel gardener, an Army veteran and a member of Teamsters Union Local 995.

He is survived by one son, Harry Knepper.

Burial will be in Palm Memorial Park. Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is arranging private services.

PAULINE KNOLLER

Pauline Knoller, 81, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. She was born April 11, 1916, in Gibbon, Neb. A 49-year resident, she was a retired nurse from Las Vegas Hospital and a World War II Army nurse.

She is survived by one son, Randy Knoller of Las Vegas; two daughters, Linda Mendenhall of Las Vegas and Janet Kotler of Israel; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be private. Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., is handling arrangements.

Amor A. Landaz, 48, of Las Vegas died Saturday in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 1, 1949, in the Philippines. A 21-year resident, she was a nurse.

She is survived by her husband, Roberto S.; two sons, Robert A. Landaz and Bjorn A. Landaz, both of Las Vegas; her mother, Felicisima Amante of Santa Ana, Calif.; five brothers, Florencio Amante, Amada Amante, Rey Amante and Oscar Amante, all of Santa Ana, and Bobby Amante of Hawthorne, Calif.; and five sisters, Zeneida Lopez and Gloria Dizon, both of Santa Ana, Helen Amante of Los Angeles, Diana Ballerano of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Teresita Hildalgo of Laguna Hills, Calif.

Sam Anthony Manuse, 81, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. He was born Dec. 26, 1915, in Rochester, N.Y. A 10-year resident, he was a machinist.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine; one son, Richard Manuse; one daughter, Agatha Guzzetta; three sisters, Josephine Pullara, Clara Antonucci and Sandy Taddeo; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Roberta Hope McCaughtry, 59, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospice. She was born Nov. 1, 1938, in Buffalo, N.Y. An 18-year resident, she was a bookkeeper and a member of the Pomegranate Society.

She is survived by one son, Scott (Kenneth S.) Silverberg; two daughters, Audrey M. Silverberg and Dumplyn; and one sister, Penelope J. Frank.

Sherry Lynn (Wehilani) Nihipali, 21, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. She was born Dec. 2, 1975, in Hawaii. A five-year resident, she was a hotel housekeeping supervisor.

She is survived by her husband, Emory Jr.; one son, Javen, and one daughter, Tiani, both of Las Vegas; her father, Rudy Miller of the Philippines; her mother and stepfather, Betty and Nestor Guan, and one sister, Christy Miller, all of Las Vegas; and two brothers, Rudy Jun Miller of Las Vegas and Werner Miller of Hawaii.

Robert Plummer, 75, of North Las Vegas died Monday in a local health care center. He was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Memphis, Tenn. A 22-year resident, he was a retired plumber for the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority and a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; three daughters, Stacey Reed, Amanda Plummer and Kristine Plummer, and one son, Robert Plummer, all of Las Vegas.

Joseph A. Riggio, 77, of Las Vegas died Saturday in Las Vegas. He was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Chicago. A 17-year resident, he was retired from the Chicago Independent Truckers.

He is survived by three sons, Joseph A. Riggio Jr., Kenneth W. Riggio and Jeffrey J. Riggio, all of Las Vegas; one daughter, Melody Dye of Bourbonnais, Ill.; one sister, Pauline Buckley of New Hampshire; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; one daughter, Louise Springer of Las Vegas; three sons, William Therrien of Lynn, Mass., and Paul Therrien and James Therrien, both of Las Vegas; two sisters, Lorraine Patterson and Joan Hilse, both of North Andover, Mass.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Angeline E. Tortora, 74, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospice. She was born June 21, 1923, in Rochester, N.Y. A nine-year resident, she was a retired insurance secretary.

She is survived by her husband, James; one daughter, Virginia Wedding of Acton, Calif.; one son, Dennis Tortora of Palmdale, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will continue until 7 p.m. today with a 6 p.m. service in Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Christ the King Catholic Church.

JUNIOR PORT TURVEY

Junior Port Turvey, 76, of Las Vegas died Saturday in Las Vegas. He was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Ohio. A 30-year resident, he was a retired Navy chief petty officer and World War II and Korean War veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; three sons, Rodney M. Turvey of Las Vegas, Patrick Turvey of Mesa, Ariz., and Rick Turvey of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Burial will follow in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.
