Wife of sheriff’s detective arrested on charges of embezzlement

Deedra "Dee" Cassell turned herself into the sheriff's Fernley substation last week and was later released on her own recognizance, the Mason Valley News reported.

She was booked on 17 counts of embezzlement involving a total of $187,817 and three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card involving a total of $29,360.

The complaint says the charges involved the cheating of Stone Brothers Nevada Machinery of Fernley.

District Attorney Robert Estes turned the case's prosecution over to Lander County District Attorney Will Mattly.

Estes said he would have had a conflict of interest prosecuting the case since the defendant's husband, Jim, is a sheriff's detective.

The Nevada Division of Investigation investigated the case instead of the sheriff's department for the same reason, Sheriff Sid Smith said.
