Chernobyl victims still in need of supplies

Ten years after the world learned about the April 26 nuclear accident at Chernobyl's Unit 4, effects are still being felt, said Rick Nielsen, executive director of Citizen Alert in Las Vegas.

"The victims of this accident are still suffering and badly in need of basic supplies such as baby food, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and food supplements," Nielsen said.

Citizen Alert is the statewide sponsor of the national Chernobyl relief effort spearheaded by Green Peace, Nuclear Information and Referral Service and Green Party USA.

The public can drop off supplies at Great Earth Vitamin and Wild Oats stores through Earth Day, April 22, Nielsen said. Items such as aspirin, baby food, cereals and food supplements in original, unopened packages with a minimum shelf life of six months are acceptable. No canned goods, fresh foods, clothes or bulky items will be collected.
