Law enforcement will be on the run at this event

More than 7,000 runners and race personnel will descend upon Las Vegas, Pahrump and Baker, Calif., the weekend of April 20-21 in the annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race, the nation's largest law-enforcement athletic event.

Officers from departments as far away as Calgary to Dallas will participate in the 12th edition of the race, which is coordinated by the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club.

Nevada teams participating this year include Las Vegas Metro, the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff's Department.

The 20 race legs vary from flat stretches of desert to the infamous "billy-goat legs," which climb 2,000 feet in elevation to the summit, to the "Hollywood leg," the final six miles toward the neon glow of the Las Vegas Strip and the finish line at the heliport.

Award ceremonies will be April 21 at the new race headquarters, the Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino and Convention Center.
