Parents at Vegas Verdes Elementary to Rally Against Teacher Layoffs and Larger Classes

Parents Concerned with Teacher Layoffs and Larger Classes Take Their Message to the Streets
Impact on their children’s education too great to sit it out

*** Today, Monday, May 7, 2012 ***

Who: A growing group of parents at Vegas Verdes Elementary School will hold a rally and demonstration to speak out against the potential teacher layoffs and to address the impact these layoffs will have on their children’s education.

What: Last week, talk about teacher layoffs permeated the news waves causing a real concern for parents and students across the valley, especially at Vegas Verdes Elementary. With a predominantly Hispanic population, this tight-knit school community knows firsthand the importance of having a sound education in the United States. Parents and grandparents worry that their children will be robbed of this opportunity if the Clark County School District conducts teacher layoffs.

Vegas Verdes has seen its share of teacher turnover. Parents know that if they lose any more teachers, their children’s education will suffer even more. Their children have a language barrier they are working hard to overcome and are afraid that in larger classes their children won’t receive the additional instruction that will fully integrate them in the learning process.

Parents are calling for the School Board of Trustees and Superintendent Jones to put their children’s education first.

When: Monday, May 7, 2012 @ 2:26 p.m.

Where: Vegas Verdes Elementary School
4000 El Parque Avenue
Las Vegas, NV 89102
