Vegas Play of the Day: San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks under 9.5 runs: $330 to win $300

The Giants and the Diamondbacks are the two highest run-scoring teams in the National League. That’s not going to last.

Arizona might have an above-average offense, but San Francisco’s will likely pan out mediocre. The total on this game indicates the betting market is committing the cardinal sin of overreacting to three games.

The over/under opened at 9 last night before adding a half point this morning. The first three games in the series all went over, but that’s not indicative of what will happen going forward.

The bats will slow. Neither Arizona starter Robbie Ray nor San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija inspire a great deal of confidence, but they both should be at their best in their first starts of the season.

They pitched well in the preseason and will hopefully carry it over to when the games matter. But this bet isn’t all about pitching; it’s just as much about hitting.

These teams’ bats will cool off.

Current Standings: Grimala (6-10, $8,425), Keefer (40-34-3, $8,221), Granger (13-17-1, $6,677), Brewer (27-28-1, $6,685)
