Vegas Play of the Day: Air Force vs. New Mexico in Mountain West tournament

Mountain West Conference Tournament - New Mexico vs. Fresno St.

Sam Morris / Las Vegas Sun

New Mexico fans cheer the Lobos on against Fresno State during their Mountain West Conference tournament game Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Thomas & Mack Center. New Mexico won 93-77.

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

New Mexico minus-2 vs. Air Force: $550 to win $500 During the second week of March, Las Vegas always feels like Albuquerque West. New Mexico is a force at the Mountain West basketball tournament, bolstered by a fan base that packs the Thomas & Mack Center and winning the past three championships. While this year’s New Mexico team isn’t expected to make it four consecutive titles, the Lobos will do enough to beat Air Force today in a first-round game.

New Mexico last Saturday snapped an eight-game losing streak with a victory against Wyoming, showing it still has some fight. Despite the struggles — they've been more disappointing than hometown UNLV — the Lobos always come to play in Las Vegas at tournament time. It’s a week-long party for their fans, traveling to Las Vegas and creating a distinct advantage. Air Force will have few fans in the stands, making this a home game for the Lobos.

Neither team is expected to score a lot of points, meaning the game won’t be decided until the final minutes. That’s where the New Mexico fan base will take over. New Mexico fans will be chanting the rally cry of “Everyone’s a Lobo” after this game.

Standings: Keefer (69-68-2, $10,437), Bern (68-62-1, $9,846), Brewer (60-72-3, $3,515)
