Las Vegas High graduate Herculez Gomez got his first goal for the Kansas City Wizards in dramatic fashion Saturday night.
Gomez booted a Claudio Lopez corner kick into the back of the net with his left foot in the third minute of second-half stoppage time for a 3-2 victory over San Jose at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City.
The Wizards (10-10-9, 39 points) control their playoff destiny. They finish the regular season next Saturday at New England against the Revolution and clinch a playoff spot with a victory.
There is a scenario in which Kansas City can advance to the postseason if it ties New England.
Gomez, 26, was traded from Colorado to the Wizards a month ago. Saturday’s stunner was his third goal of the season.
