Maddux, in Hawaii, ponders future; wins 18th Gold Glove (UPDATED)

Reached during a Wednesday round of golf in Hawaii, longtime Las Vegas resident Greg Maddux said he wasn’t certain about his future in baseball.

Sounding as if he was sizing up a long putt, Maddux was asked if he had made a decision about retiring.

“Not yet,” he said. Then he had to return to the links.

Hours later, it was announced that he had won a record 18th Gold Glove for his defensive prowess. He is the only pitcher in baseball history to win at least 15 games in 17 consecutive seasons.

Maddux spent most of this season in San Diego before an Aug. 19 trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He struggled in seven starts down the stretch for the NL West champions, going 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA to finish the year 8-13 with a 4.22 mark overall.

He worked four innings out of the bullpen during the playoffs and the Dodgers were eliminated by Philadelphia in the NL Championship Series. He filed for free agency after the World Series.

Monday at the Major League Baseball general managers’ meetings in Southern California, Scott Boras, Maddux’s agent, said it’s doubtful the 23-year veteran would play again.

“As it stands now,” Boras told the New York Post, “he is not going to play.”

Maddux, 42, will be in Hawaii through the weekend.

The sure-fire Hall of Famer and Valley High graduate is 355-227 in his career.
