Las Vegas sports handicapper "Fairway" Jay Ginsbach will be trying to beat heavily favored Tiger Woods at the betting windows, instead recommending plays on four other golfers in the U.S. Open.
Here is a summary of Ginsbach's four picks:
Phil Mickelson (6-1 at the Las Vegas Hilton sports book): San Diego's Mickelson will be playing on his hometown course at Torrey Pines, where he owns three victories in the Buick Invitational. The added length on the U.S. Open course should favor Mickelson.
Sergio Garcia (20-1): Coming off a victory in The Players Championship, Garcia is in good form as he shoots for his first major championship. Garcia missed the cut in the past two U.S. Opens, but at Torrey Pines he figures to encounter rough that's less severe and greens that are not as fast.
Stewart Cink (40-1): With six top-10 finishes, including a tie for third place at the Masters, Cink could be putting together the best season of his career.
Padraig Harrington (25-1): The reigning British Open champ is in superb form this year with four top-five finishes. He has the off-the-tee length and the putting and scrambling game to contend at Torrey Pines, although a lack of driving accuracy could justifiably be keeping his odds inflated.
