Longtime Las Vegas resident and San Diego starting pitcher Greg Maddux gift-wrapped a tidy birthday present to himself Sunday in 95-degree heat in Los Angeles.
He limited the Dodgers to two hits and a walk over five innings, throwing only 68 pitches in an eventual 1-0 victory for the Padres.
Maddux turns 42 on Monday and caught a flight home after the game to celebrate with his family.
The victory improved his career mark to 349-214.
The Valley High graduate is 2-0 this season and he is scheduled to face Arizona on Saturday night in Phoenix. In 18 career starts against the Diamondbacks, Maddux is 2-10 with a 4.88 earned-run average.
