Rebels Notebook: Thornton named MWC Player of the Week

A pair of game-winning hits with two outs in the Rebels' final at-bats earned UNLV senior outfielder Ryan Thornton Player of the Week honors on Monday from the Mountain West Conference.

The Vallejo, Calif., native hit .375 (9-for-24) with two home runs, a double and seven RBI over the course of five games in the past week. The Rebels took two of three from New Mexico over the weekend in Albuquerque.

In the game's second series, he hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth to break a 6-6 tie, as UNLV held on for an 8-6 win. In the series finale on Sunday, he hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to cap a 13-11 triumph.

Thornton joins teammates Drew Beuerlein and Tanner Peters in gaining MWC weekly honors this season. The MWC Pitcher of the Week -- surprise, surprise -- was San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg.

UNLV (25-23 overall, 9-9 MWC) hosts is final regular season non-conference game of the season, taking on UC Riverside (27-14 overall, 7-8 Big West) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

No. 21 Rebels take third place at MWC men's golf championships

Behind a 1-over-par 285 as a team in the final round, UNLV placed third this weekend at the MWC men's golf championships at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National. UNLV's final total of 845 (7-under par) put them just a shot behind TCU and San Diego State.

New Mexico's Steve Saunders was 9-under for the tournament to take the individual title, while UNLV's Ji Moon was second at 5 under. After the tournament, UNLV's Derek Ernst and Eddie Olson were named to the 10-person All-MWC team.

The Rebels now head to regionals in Austin, Texas, on May 14.

UNLV softball reaches 30-win plateau for 12th time

A 14-4, 6-inning victory over Utah on Friday night at Eller Media Stadium propelled UNLV to hits 12th 30-win season in program history. The Rebels are now 31-19 overall and 7-7 in the Mountain West after sweeping the series with a 12-8 triumph over the Utes on Saturday.

The Rebels wrap up the regular season next Saturday at San Diego State.
