Before he left for San Diego for the summer, Jerry Tarkanian sat down to talk about life outside basketball.

Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian was released from Scripps Memorial Hospital earlier today and was transferred to a rehabilitation center in San Diego.

On July 17, Tarkanian underwent a 90-minute procedure, in which a bone spur that had been rubbing against his spinal cord was removed, at the La Jolla, Calif., hospital.

The condition had caused pain in Tarkanian’s legs, hindering his ability to walk, for several years, and Tarkanian is hoping the surgery alleviates that pain.

Two weeks before the operation, Tarkanian broke two ribs in a Jacuzzi spill and fractured a shoulder in a separate fall.

Danny Tarkanian said his father is doing much better and there is no timetable for his stay in the rehab center.

Jerry Tarkanian celebrates his 79th birthday on Aug. 8.
