The Mtn. will air hour-long Tark show Saturday

UNLV hoops fans will want to watch The Mtn. on Saturday, not just for the Rebels’ game against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.

Afterward, the cable network will air an hour-long special on Jerry Tarkanian as part of its Legends Series. UNLV and TCU tip off at 2:30 p.m. The Tarkanian special will be shown at 5 p.m.

The Sun obtained a promotional copy of the show Wednesday and it is full of highlights, with some lowlights, of Tarkanian’s 19 seasons at UNLV.

Tim Neverett, who has a long history working in Las Vegas and recently got the play-by-play radio gig for the Pittsburgh Pirates, is the host of the show.

It is entertaining and insightful, beginning with his first game as the Rebels’ boss – an 82-76 defeat to Texas Tech at the Convention Center on Dec. 1, 1973.

Former players Larry Johnson, Robert Smith, Sidney Green, Ricky Sobers, Glen Gondrezick, Danny Tarkanian, Eric Booker and Armon Gilliam are among the many subjects who were interviewed.

Topics included Tarkanian’s recruiting philosophy, the recruitment of Green, that loss to Texas Tech, the NCAA championship season, conditioning and Tark’s towel.

Mayor Oscar Goodman talks about Tark’s mistreatment by the NCAA. Lois Tarkanian talks about tutoring several players. Former athletic director Brad Rothermel talks about Tarkanian’s impact on the school and college basketball.

Not being in the Hall of Fame and Tark's ouster from UNLV are also covered.

Ex-Rebel Reggie Theus mentions frolicking on the Strip, having fun in a club all night long, and leaving at sunup only to realize he had 30 minutes to get to a class.

UNLV fans will want to prepare their DVRs.

It will be shown twice the following week, three times on Jan. 17 and about 50 more times before the end of the season.
