Former UNLV golfer Chad Campbell nearly broke a two-decade scoring record Thursday at the Masters in finishing the opening round atop the leaderboard.

Campbell, 34, birdied four consecutive holes on the back-nine and needed one more birdie on the final two holes to break the tournament record of 63 by Nick Price in 1986.

But he bogeyed Nos. 17 and 18 to finish at 7-under-par 65. He leads Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan by one shot.

Campbell, who opened his round with five straight birdies, has four career victories on the PGA Tour. His highest finish in a major tournament was in 2003 when he took second in the PGA Championship. He took third at the Masters in 2006.

Campbell, a member of three Ryder Cup teams, finished 2008 as No. 24 on the tour money list with more than $2.4 million in earnings.
