UNLV adds fourth ‘09 commit with juco CB Grant

UNLV football coach Mike Sanford said a week ago that he and his staff were looking to add a couple of juco prospects to the 2009 fold in an effort to shore things up in the secondary.

Early this week, the Rebels added the first piece into that mix in the form of Mike Grant, a 5-foot-11 cornerback out of Sierra (Calif.) College.

Sierra is 7-0 this season, and Grant has had plenty to do with it. In an Oct. 18 win against San Joaquin Delta College, he ran a fumble back 38 yards for a score in the 54-21 blowout.

Grant played his high school ball at Laguna Creek (Calif.) High.

The Rebels graduate one of their two starting corners following this season - Geoffery Howard. One would have to assume Grant will have a chance to compete for the spot opposite Quinton Pointer heading into next season.

Grant is the Rebels' fourth commitment in the class of 2009. He joins Mesquite, Texas, receiver Mark Barefield, Perris, Calif., quarterback Caleb Herring and Peoria, Ariz., linebacker Reggie Umuolo.
