Former UNLV point guard Marcus Banks started and logged 35 minutes for the Miami Heat on Thursday in its 100-98 preseason overtime defeat to New Jersey in Paris.
Banks is supposedly battling rookie Mario Chalmers, Chris Quinn and Shaun Livingston, who’s coming off a severe knee injury, to start for the Heat.
Banks, who was traded from Phoenix to Miami last season in the Shaquille O'Neal deal, scored nine points, on 4-of-10 shooting. He had seven assists, six turnovers and a steal.
In 25 minutes off the bench, Chalmers, from the national-champion Kansas Jayhawks, shot 2-for-6, including 0-for-3 beyond the 3-point arc, and collected three assists and three turnovers.
Quinn and Livingston didn’t play against the Nets.
Erik Spoelstra, 37, is starting his first season as Miami’s coach.
Ex-Rebels center Joel Anthony had five points and six boards in 13 reserve minutes for the Heat. Mark Blount started in the post and had six points and five rebounds.
Miami plays the Nets in a Sunday exhibition game in London and has four more preseason games before opening the regular season Oct. 29 against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden in New York.

I really hope it works out for him in Miami. It was tough to find time down in Phoenix with Nash and Barbosa. But hey. if Pat Riley thinks you can get the job done. He must see something in Marcus..
Riley has really been pressing Marcus, tom... wanted him in Miami most of the summer to work out, etc. With Wade and Beasley, Banks has some top-tier talent around him. We'll keep an eye on the situation through the preseason.
