Despite beating UNLV, Long out at SDSU

On the Road with the Rebels

Get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the UNLV Football team's week-long preparation for its most crucial game of the Mike Sanford-era, a date with San Diego State and the quest for bowl eligibility.

Losing 42-21 at San Diego State did nothing to help UNLV coach Mike Sanford and his team's dreams of bowl eligibility.

Apparently, on the flip side, it did nothing for Aztecs coach Chuck Long, either.

Long, who completed his third season at SDSU with a record of 9-27 - including a 3-0 mark against the Rebels - is reportedly out. A source close to the situation gave the scoop to ESPN.com's Joe Schad Sunday morning.

Public statements by athletic director Jeff Schemmel had pretty much assured Long of his position after this season, but the Aztecs lost 10 games this season for the first time in program history.

Long, a former Iowa and NFL quarterback, came to SDSU before the 2006 season after a four-year run as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma.

  1. When does Sanford get the pink slip as well?

  2. A couple of years from now if he doesn't get the defense in check.

I am pleased we won 5 games this year and if we could have stopped the three 4th quarter 80+ yard drives against AF, CSU and BYU, we could have won a few more.

This season was a positive step. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.

Already looking forward to tailgating next year and rooting the Rebs on....

  3. He won't get the slip, UNLVStud. At the very least, he'll get a shot to finish out his contract next year, and it's deserved. Five wins was still an improvement, and with all of the young talent coming back, a bowl game will be expected next season. If that doesn't happen, then there might be rumblings after '09.

  4. As a season ticket holder and a die hard Reb fan, I was disgusted and depressed that we lost to the same team that lost to Cal Poly. However, I just don't understand how people can't see the improvement and the upgraded level of talent, not to mention how young they are. Also, I've tried explaining to the Sanford haters over and over that UNLV is cash strapped and that hiring a new staff is outside the University's budget. Are they so blinded by their grief that they can't see reality. Such a knee jerk reaction from fans, yes Sanford won only 6 games before this season but obviously they're a more quality team. So think a while about the whole picture before whining for change.

  5. HE DESERVES TO COME BACK?!?!?!??!? Are you for real? He loses to one of the worst teams in America with a possible bowl berth on the line and you say he deserves to come back? Sanford may be an offensive genius (although I don't see that), but he doesn't know squat about defense and hasn't for four years. If UNLV had any football boosters, they would raise a million bucks like they did at SDSU and send Sanford packing. Remember, all these players this year were ones recruited by Sanford.
