Dorsey named CFL special teams player of year

Former UNLV running back Dominique Dorsey won the Canadian Football League’s Special Teams player of the Year award this week in Montreal.

He is the second Toronto Argonaut to win the award.

Dorsey, 25, set Toronto records this season with 1,257 yards in kickoff returns, and with 225 in one game.

He averaged 25.1 yards a kickoff return this season, the best average in the CFL for anyone who returned at least 20 kicks.

Moreover, the native of Victorville, Calif., returned 63 punts for 752 yards. His 11.9-yard average was the best in the league for anyone who returned at least 50. His season-best was 94 yards and he had a touchdown.

His best kickoff return was 92 yards, and he also had one touchdown in that department.

He won the award despite missing five games with an injury. He had more all-purpose yards than any other CFL player by 150 yards.

Dorsey is the last Rebels running back to gain 1,000 yards. He ran for 1,261 yards, and six touchdowns, in 2004.

He received the award at a CFL banquet at the Casino de Montreal.

Toronto finished the season 4-14. The Grey Cup will be played Sunday between Calgary and Montreal.
