Purvis named MWC Special Teams Player of the Week

UNLV freshman defensive back Deante Puvis on Monday was tapped as the Mountain West Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week.

In Saturday's 27-20 victory over New Mexico, Purvis averaged 34.3 yards on three kickoff returns, including one which stretched 55 yards. It was the Rebels' longest kick return since 2004.

His biggest moment, though, came with UNLV up 20-17 in the fourth quarter, when Purvis blocked an Adam Miller punt, which Rodelin Anthony scooped and took in from 11 yards out for a touchdown.

Purvis also notched the tackle on the ensuing kickoff, giving him three special teams stops on the season.

He's the fourth Rebel to earn an MWC weekly honor, and the second on special teams. Malo Taumua took home the honors following UNLV's 23-20 overtime win at Arizona State on Sept. 13.

Utah quarterback Brian Johnson was named the MWC Offensive Player of the Week, and Wyoming linebacker Ward Dobbs earned the defensive mention.

The Rebels, who at 4-6 still have hopes for postseason play, welcome Wyoming to Sam Boyd Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff Thursday night.
