Kevin Kruger returns to Las Vegas from Bulgaria

Former UNLV point guard Kevin Kruger has returned from Bulgaria and is exploring his career options in the U.S.

Kruger spent about a month playing for Lukoil Academic in Sofia, Bulgaria, in that country’s top professional basketball league, the National Basketball League.

“It wasn’t a situation that was working the way he had imagined,” said UNLV basketball coach Lon Kruger, Kevin’s father. “He thought it would be more productive to be here.”

The elder Kruger said Kevin is looking into opportunities in the NBA Development League. Last season, he played for Utah Flash in the NBA’s minor league after being the last player cut by the Orlando Magic.

He started 45 of 49 games, averaging 13.3 points and 7.1 assists. He shot 38.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 88 percent from the free-throw line for the Flash.

Kruger played for the Milwaukee Bucks in their training camp this fall but was released before the season started. He said he had heard interest from teams in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands before opting for Bulgaria.
