Mertz helps U-20 team win World Cup

UNLV women's soccer coach Kat Mertz helped the U.S. 20-and-under women's national team win a World Cup on Sunday in a 2-1 victory over North Korea in Santiago, Chile.

Mertz has been with the team since the summer of 2007, and she served as an assistant to coach Tony DiCicco in the team's run-up to the World Cup.

DiCicco guided the senior women's team to that groundbreaking victory in the 1999 World Cup in which the U.S. played host. That final, in which the U.S. beat China, was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

North Korea won the first U-20 Women's World Cup in 2006.

The U.S. women also won the Olympics in China, and this is the first time that multiple elite women's teams from the same nation have won world championships in the same year.
