Miller recommends stellar public, private sector names for redistricting panel

Friday, July 15, 2011 | 6:36 a.m.

Judge Todd Russell said Secretary of State Ross Miller should come up with a panel of "masters" to oversee redistricting, and Miller has responded with alacrity to the unusual request.

On Twitter late Thursday, Miller recommended:

----Ex-U.S. Sen. and Gov. Richard Bryan, widely respected and admired, never seen as a rabid partisan

----Ex-state Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, the legendary Carson City leader

----Ex-state Sen. Terry Care. always seen as a serious, thoughtful lawmaker

----Carson City Cleark-Recorder Alan Glover, an experienced hand

----Las Vegas attorney Eva Gracia Mendoza, an experienced legal and political operative

----Bob Erickson, once the respected head of the Legislative Counsel Bureau's research division

----Heather Murren, the founder of the Nevada Cancer Institute who also served on the national Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission

I understand all but Murren already have agreed to be involved. Murren is interested but will only agree if scheduling works.

No one can make deals as Raggio and Bryan can, and the supporting cast is pretty impressive, too.

Let's hope Russell, who called Miller's House special election ideas "unreasonable and absurd," has a different take on this idea.
