Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid kicked off the general election campaign two days after the primary with a new ad emphasizing his ability to bring jobs to Nevada. The emphasis is that as the No. 1 senator, "no one can do more" -- as opposed to what would happen if Sharron Angle replaced him, the subtext goes.

That's right, only Harry Reid can accomplish the following:
A.) Raise our taxes to unprecedented levels.
B.) Jack unemployment up to 15-17-20%
C.) Increase the deficit by over $1 Trillion.
D.) Help Bankrupt the U.S. of A.
Anybody who would think this guy is good for Nevada OR the United States is a complete hypocrite.
The moaning and whining about taxes is really getting tiresome. We live in one of only a handful of states (there are 9, to be precise) without a personal income tax -- and what exactly do we have to show for it? Are businesses flocking to our low-tax Eden? Is our economy flourishing?
Gee, I wonder if that might have something to do with the fact that our infrastructure is terrible. Our roads are awful, our funding for primary education is an embarrassment, and we're now cutting degree programs at our mediocre Universities. With every day that goes by, our State becomes LESS attractive to businesses.
Raise our taxes to an unprecedented level? Unless you made over $200k, your federal taxes went DOWN thanks to Reid, whitesox.
The U.S. unemployment rate is beneath 10% and is holding steady, thanks to the stimulus package passed by Reid.

Higher taxes are not just income tax. Fees, assesments, etc. all play into higher taxes. But we haven't gotten to the big one yet. That would be a VAT that will kill everyone. As for Harry Reid supporting strong education. He has been in public service for forty years - a Senator for over twenty of those years. Tell me, westvegas, how have our schools done during that period of time? Frankly, they've gone in the toilet like a lot of other promises by Sir Harry.
Do away with the EPA? Great! The agency was on guard when the spill hit so what confidence do you have in them, westvegas? Fines and sanctions for environmental waste would do the trick without having a floundering agency in charge.
Harry Reid is for government determining how we live, what we earn and what doctors we can see. Sharron Angle is for personal choice. If you want to be wet-nursed for the rest of your life, vote Harry. I prefer to call my own shots.
P.S. - Social Security will completely implode within fifteen years. When those who have paid in don't get paid out, they'll wish they had looked at reforming the process.
How about all of you NeoComm Harry Reid supporters out there give me all of your money. Then I will return your money to you at 75 cents on the dollar. That is exactly what the federal government does to us. For every tax dollar Nevadans send to Washington we only get 75 cents back. This is why intelligent Nevadans don't want the federal government's "help". Other states get far more back than they put in. "No one can do better". Tax increases - Yes, Tax Increases. When Obamacare kicks in Nevada is really going to suffer because our state is heavily dependent upon revenue from private insurance taxes to fund Medicaid and SCHIP. More people on Medicaid and the exchanges will not be subject to that tax. The state is going to have to get the money from somewhere, and who do you think will bear the burden - the taxpayers.
Harry USED to be good for Nevada but no longer represents our interests. Even Big Pharma supports Harry. Doesn't that tell you anything about what Harry got out of Obamacare? If I ever achieve a salary of $200k or more, I don't want to have to pay more taxes because I was successful and others weren't. That is theft plain and simple. Just because someone is successful doesn't make them obligated to take care of those who aren't.

Fact check: The deregulation under Clinton was authored by Republicans, snuck into a spending bill, and signed into law a few DAYS before Bush took office.
So explain to me why Bush and the GOP-lead Congress sat back and did nothing while America was plunged into an economic meltdown via legislation that the GOP wrote. They had six years of dual-branch control to re-implement the legislation.
They did nothing but stand by and watch as the banks loaned money to anyone with a pulse, regardless of risk. They allowed banks to bundle toxic assets and sell them while buying insurance against their losses when those assets eventually tanked.
The GOP refuses to take responsibility... again.

Tax rates for the wealthy are no higher now than they were under Clinton. Don't be so dramatic. The tax rate under Bush was 36%, and when the Bush tax cuts expire, it will be 39%.

Edgewise, get it straight. GSE's (Government Sponsored Entities) were set up in 1998. Those would be Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Spearheaded by the leadership of Senator Dodd and Congressman Frank, these GSE's became the backstop for lending to sub-prime mortgages. On seventeen occasions the Bush administration sent pleas to the banking committees to halt the guaranteeing of the sub-primes by the GSE's. This culminated in 2004 when the DEMOCRATS filibustered the proposed scaling back of these GSE's because Frank and Dodd believed that the American dream should be available to all Americans.
Go look at the record. I believe that at least one Democratic Senator - the name escapes me - said that it was one vote he deeply regretted.
The interesting fact about all this would be the fact that in the election cycles of 2006 and 2008 the Democrats received over 70% of all political contributions from Wall Street. Look at the leaders on Wall Street - Jamie Dimon (JP Morgan), LLoyd Blankfein (Goldman) and John Corzine at MF Global. All big Democratic supporters and contributors.
THe Democratic Party is the party beholden to big business. From the deals for Pharma negotiated by Billy Tauzen (D) to the Wall Street connections to giving the unions General Motors, the Dems are in the pockets of big business.

Sorry, but the majority of sub-prime lending was done by non-governmental lenders, well ahead of any involvement of Fannie/Freddie.
Further, you're obviously embarassed to admit it was Phil Gramm who sponsored both the Glass/Steagall repeal AND the Commodities Futures Modernization Act, both of which would not have existed except for support from Republicans, not Democrats.
If Republicans hadn't sponsored and voted overwhelmingly for the deregulation of the lending industry, John McCain would have been President today.
You get points for that one, Edgewise. Phil Gramm, whose wife Wendy Gramm was the head of the CFTC for a few years, did a lot to damage the industry. But, the political pressure put on the banks to make sub-prime loans at the behest of Democrats was an enormous factor in the mortgage collapse. THe filibuster in 2004 was the kiss of death to any meaningful attempt to avoid disaster.

As I said, EVERYONE had a hand in the meltdown. If anyone thinks that the Republicans or Democrats are singularly reponsible they are full of crap. Major mistakes were made on both sides in the attempt to appease constituents and garner popular support.
The problem we ALL have is the "insider" "old boy" network of trading off one bad program for another guy's bad program. That is why I have stated that not only does Reid have to go, but also guys like McConnell, McCain, Kerry and Hatch. Let's clear the decks and get some new fresh thoughts circulating and minimize the damage of lobbyists and special interests.
And then, after these new people have been there for four or six years - kick them out!!!!

I can safely say that Harry has nothing but contempt for you and I, and we know it. He wants to cause this country to flounder on the shoals of self-interest, corruption, and chaos. If we take Harry's platitudes to their logical conclusion, we see that eventually, Harry will impose ideology, control thought, and punish virtually any behavior he disapproves of.

Well, I suppose Harry's also good at convincing people that he understands the difference between civilization and savagery, but my point is that Harry's most progressive idea is to stifle the free and open nature of public opinion. If that sounds progressive to you, you must be facing the wrong way. I assume that he is unaware of his obligation not to incite hatred of conservative opinions, as this unawareness would be consistent with his prior displays of ignorance as shown by his contempt for not only the American people, but those who reside in the state of Nevada!
Our path is set. By this, I mean that in order to search for solutions that are more creative and constructive than the typically prodigal ones championed by the adolescent DNC, we must bring important information about Harry's insensate words into the limelight. I consider that requirement a small price to pay because Harry's real enmity against us comes through in his sophistries, which he uses to divert our attention from the serious issues. That concept can be extended, mutatis mutandis. If Harry were to interfere with the most important principles of democracy, social upheaval and violence will follow.
Letting Harry toss sops to the egos of the jejune is a recipe for disaster. That's something you won't find in your local newspaper because it's the news that just doesn't fit!

1.Establishes policies related to federal education funding, administers distribution of funds and monitors their use.
So if our state does not have enough as it is, where will basic revenues come from without the Dept of Ed
2.Collects data and oversees research on America's schools.
Who will compile all the data from the various states to get a better overall understanding of where we stand?
3.Identifies major issues in education and focuses national attention on them.
How is one state going to handle that by themselves?
4.Enforces federal laws prohibiting discrimination in programs that receive federal funds.

1. If the states received block funding there would be no need for this provision.
2. States already have monitoring policies to see increases/decreases in student achievement. They're called school boards.
3. This is just another bureaucratic boondoggle. See #2 above.
4. No need for #4 if block grants are made. If there were some sort of civil rights violation it is the business of the Justice Department to follow through.

its not just one deregulation that caused the crisis. In fact, without the repeal of glass-steagall the malinvestment encouraged by the artificially low interest rates simply would have gone to another sector of the economy. We still would have had a recession.

So what your saying is you want all the benefits of having a US Dept of Education, without the oversight by the Feds.
See, I could agree with a restructuring, something like a federal board of education, made up of members from the state boards. This way each State would know the issues of the others and what they were doing to adress them, and what was working and what wasn't.
See school boards are made up of a limited # of individuals, and State A might be facing an Issue State X faced 2 years ago. So your train of thought would be let State A keep trying different methods until it gets it right, while all along State X had the solution?
There has to be some sort of collective conciousness, so we can exceed together, and learn from each others mistakes.

The sharing of information about which state program is working does not need the Federal Government to be the disseminator of information.
Here I'm going to say something nice about Rory Reid. From what i understand he has made an in-depth search of programs from around the country and come up with some good ideas for Nevada. He didn't have to go through a bureaucratic maze in D. C. to get this done.
My point is that as many dollars as possible should end up in the classroom as opposed to being sucked away by some talking head in D.C. Don't you think it would be better if we got and extra $50M to spend on our kids instead of a memo of how to spend federal funds?
P.S. - I like your idea of a national board that could convene a couple times a year to share ideas. That's how businesses become more efficient - the same practice could be used to increase the effectiveness of our schools.

The main concern is educating children, unfortunately when there is profit involved, companies tend to put those first. Thats my fear.
I agree DC is fk'd up, but it is our responsibility to fix it.

I consider myself socially liberal, but by no means do I think socialism is good. I think in some instances it counters the harm done by out of control capitolism, but it cannot be permanent.

It's really pointless arguing with the Harry Reid haters. They're like a bunch of parrots, repeating what they hear from the higher ups in the Republican party. It's useless to respond to their nonsensical comments. Just go to the polls and vote for Reid. That's the best response there is.
I disagree. People dont personally hate Reid, they dont know him, they hate what he represents.
The fact is, we as a society have numerous issues, and unless we hold our handout to those we do not see eye to eye with, it will continue to get worse until the country is physically divided.
If we avoid rhetoric, and examine each others fears and respect them, if we approach ideas with open minds rather than quick conclusions, I believe we can work this out together,

The truth is, the issues are so interconnected as far as the socio economic implications, and the minds ability to be conditioned, that their is much more to our current situation than most people will admit.

There is so much potential in all of us, we need to get away from the old traditional rhetoric.

The true mechanism of congress was to give a podium to differing opinions and for an assembly of open minded individuals to examine the pros and cons.
That is where the heart of our issuses lies. We no longer have that function in DC, it has failed. We really need to examine why. I have my ideas....
Closed primaries- eventually pits 2 fringe candidates against one another. Thus the make up of congress becomes far left vs far right.
Campaign finance/lobbying- these two institutions create dependancies in govt. Dependancy is exactly what the framers set out to avoid. Which is why the constitution was drafted to create 3 seperate branches independent from one another. We must eliminate these all together. Lobbying will be easy. Campaign finance will take a think tank to eliminate.
In my head, we will never get the government WE were supposed to until these are changed.
The last thing we need to do though is attack one another. We are all brothers and sisters under the flag. As much as some of the actions of the GOP disgust me, I cant say the democrats are any better. They dont even have a good abbreviation for their name.(jk)
We have to stop, as Americans we should not let us be divided. Wether Palin, or Obama. Reid, or Beck, we have to stand together, or else WE will fall.

The Bush Administration and their wars took over a trillion dollars away from needed projects we the people could have used, and we'll keep paying for this as will our children. Obama steps in with promise for change and the first thing he does is spend close to a trillion dollars to bail out the corporations that screwed up our economy. That's the same as paying a crook to steal. If you haven't noticed our past Presidents are just puppets to big money like the Bilderbergs, tri-lateral commission, etc.

Union government workers make $12 more per hour than their counterparts in the private sector. Government hiring at a 13.1% increase this year while the private sector is flat. Do you think that is either "fair" or makes good common sense?

A little known secret your union hasn't' told you, I know you are aware of it, I think maybe you forgot, here it is, the Teamster's primary members were all too stupid to graduate from high school so they decided to join the Teamsters. Also, it a well known fact that Teamsters have destroyed their own union when they disseminated into varying unions, they are no longer united yet too stupid to see it.
You see, when I understand what your party is all about and why the Teamster fights so hard to keep around, it's a well known fact that somehow, somewhere, someplace, somebody from the Teamster gene pool is sucking off the system or will be sucking from system, the gig is up.
