Horsford to donors: Pay-for-access plan ‘may have been misconstrued by some’

That's how state Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford explains to donors in a letter why he is returning their contributions after his controversial plan to sell access to private dinners was exposed. Not sure how it was "misconstrued" by anyone: It was pay (a lot) to get private dinners with Horsford and his committee chairs. Pretty dumb, especially since most donors give to the majority leader of a house -- here, in any state capital or DC -- for access and because they fear for their clients or business interest if they don't. No need to put that in writing or force donors to suffer through such meals.

The text of the letter is below and, in case you missed it, I have posted at right the sliding scale of benefits (you only got a lunch if you were cheap!) Horsford offered.

----

Dear XXXXX,

Thank you so much for your recent contribution to the Victory 2010 PAC. Our intentions may have been misconstrued by some, and we have made the decision to discontinue the Victory 2010 program. We will be returning the donation you made to this effort. Please accept my sincerest apologizes for any misunderstanding that may have been caused.

I believe that honesty and transparency is critical for Nevadans and their government. As we move forward, my focus is on finding ways to put Nevadans back to work. I'm as committed as ever to working together, and I appreciate your continued participation and support.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (702) 985-7535 at any time. Thank you again for your support.

Sincerely,

Steven Horsford

Nevada Senate Majority Leader
