Even the umps are famous in baseball

NOW

It is conversations like these, which actually transpired about 15 minutes ago, why baseball will always be the favorite sport of old guys:

Old guy No. 1: "It was Wendelstedt, right?"

Old guy No. 2: "No, Froemming. Three-two pitch to Larry Stahl."

Old guy No. 3: (catching the tail end of the conversation): "You guys talkin' umpires? Nice!"

I defy you to name another sport where the game officials are almost as well known as the players.

We were talking about Mark Buehrle's perfect game, only the 18th in baseball history, and how it should have been the 19th in baseball history had Bruce Froemming not been suffering from temporary blindness when the Cubs' Milt Pappas painted the corner on Sept. 2 , 1972 while pitching to Stahl of the Padres with two outs in the ninth.

I also recall that Lee Weyer and Ed Montague were amateur magicians. But that is a topic for another conversation.

THEN

Why is it that I can remember who Milt Pappas was pitching to in a baseball game 37 years ago but I can't remember the name of the new guy who sits at the desk right next to me?
